Hello Friends,
I have a simple coney dog recipe for you this week. This one is a little different than the one in my eBook—it’s a little sweeter. So it’s definitely not a chili dog…it’s a coney dog.
I combined a few different recipes to come up with this version, and I really like how it turned out. Hopefully it inspires you to make some too! I’d also love to hear how you make yours. Sometimes I even top mine with a little coleslaw, which is surprisingly good.
One tip before we get to the recipe: if I know we’re having tacos one night, I’ll cook an extra couple pounds of ground beef while I’m already out on the griddle. I put that extra beef in the refrigerator, and the next day making this coney sauce is as easy as dumping everything into the crock pot. It saves a ton of time.
Crock Pot Coney Dog Sauce
Ingredients
For the Sauce
- 2 pounds ground beef
- ½ cup chopped onion
- 2 cups beef broth (or water)
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
- ¼ cup white vinegar
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon celery seed
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
For Serving
- Hot dogs
- Hot dog buns
- Freshly shredded cheddar or Colby Jack cheese
- Diced white onion
- Mustard
- Coleslaw (optional, but highly recommended!)
Instructions
- Brown the ground beef and onions on your griddle or in a skillet. Drain any excess grease if needed.
- Add the beef, onions, and all of the sauce ingredients to a crock pot. Stir everything together.
- Cook on Low for 6 hours. The longer cook time really lets the flavors come together.
- When you’re ready to eat, preheat your griddle to 375-400°F.
- Cook the hot dogs, rolling them every minute or so until they’re browned to your liking.
- Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise (or butter) inside the buns and toast them on the griddle until golden brown.
- Build your coney dogs!
My Favorite Ways to Serve Them
My wife’s favorite:
- Hot dog
- Coney sauce
- Mustard
- Freshly shredded Colby Jack cheese
My favorite:
- Hot dog
- Freshly shredded cheese
- Coney sauce
- Diced white onion
Putting the cheese on before the sauce helps it melt a little better.
Don’t knock it until you try it:
- Hot dog
- Coney sauce
- Coleslaw
The sweet slaw with the savory coney sauce is a really good combination.
I hope you enjoy this one! If you make it, hit reply and let me know how you build your perfect coney dog. I’m always looking for new ideas.
Keep on griddling,
Johnny
